US men qualify for 1st Olympic Games football tournament since Beijing 2008

Olympicsxsporty - The United States men's football team has qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, breaking a 50-year wait between Olympic appearances.

Beijing 2008 was the last time the United States participated in a men's Olympic football event.

It equals the 16-year gap between Melbourne 1956 and Munich 1972, when the team did not participate.

In the semi-final of the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association (CONCACAF) Football Under-20 Championship, the team defeated host Honduras 3-0 to earn a spot in the Paris Games.

The United States scored three goals in the first half.

Paxten Aaronson of the Philadelphia Union opened the scoring in the third minute, followed by Alejandro Alvarado of FC Vizela in the 23rd.

Quinn Sullivan, a teammate of Aaronson's at Union, finished the rout two minutes before halftime.

Honduras previously defeated the United States in the deciding Olympic qualification match for Rio de Janeiro 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

The Dominican Republic, the other finalist, qualified for Paris 2024 after defeating Guatemala 4-2 on penalties following a 2-2 draw in regulation.

18-year-old Freddy Adu scored a critical qualifying goal in the United States men's final Olympic appearance.

However, they were unable to go past the group stage as they finished one point behind second-placed The Netherlands.
